Making Peace: A Poem by Denise Levertov

EDITOR'S NOTE: Denise Levertov's poetry speaks to us now as it did throughout the 1960s and '70s when Levertov became much more politically active in her life and work. As poetry editor for The Nation, she was able to support and publish the work of feminist and other leftist activist poets. The Vietnam War was an especially important focus of her poetry, which often tried to weave together the personal and political, as in her poem "The Sorrow Dance", which speaks of her sister's death. Also in response to the Vietnam War, Levertov joined the War Resisters League, and in 1968 signed the "Writers and Editors War Tax Protest" pledge, vowing to refuse tax payments in protest against the war. Levertov was a founding member of the anti-war collective RESIST along with Noam Chomsky, Mitchell Goodman, William Sloane Coffin, and Dwight Macdonald. (Source: Wikipedia)

Making Peace

A voice from the dark called out,
             ‘The poets must give us
imagination of peace, to oust the intense, familiar
imagination of disaster. Peace, not only
the absence of war.’
                                   But peace, like a poem,
is not there ahead of itself,
can’t be imagined before it is made,
can’t be known except
in the words of its making,
grammar of justice,
syntax of mutual aid.
                                       A feeling towards it,
dimly sensing a rhythm, is all we have
until we begin to utter its metaphors,
learning them as we speak.
A line of peace might appear
if we restructured the sentence our lives are making,
revoked its reaffirmation of profit and power,
questioned our needs, allowed
long pauses . . .
A cadence of peace might balance its weight
on that different fulcrum; peace, a presence,
an energy field more intense than war,
might pulse then,
stanza by stanza into the world,
each act of living
one of its words, each word
a vibration of light—facets
of the forming crystal.

Don't Let Trump Misuse Our Country's Military for His Authoritarian Purposes!!!

RED ALERT!!! Strongman Trump's Authoritarian use of the US military to crush any resistance to his fascist regime is rapidly escalating. Say goodbye Constitutional Republic if this keeps up without sufficient resistance.

The New York Times reported that, "President Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday that the protesters in Los Angeles 'are insurrectionists,' a term that several of his aides have been using as well, in what may become a rationale for him to invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act." Although he hasn't invoked the Insurrection Act, he's pushed it very close to the edge by sending federalized National Guard troops into Los Angeles "to assist law enforcement." Politico reported that today Trump "ordered about 700 Marines to join National Guard troops in Los Angeles."

Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Greg Casar (D-Texas) said in a statement that "Trump politicizing and weaponizing the National Guard makes us all less safe and less free. His threat to deploy the Marines into the streets of an American city is an illegal and authoritarian escalation." Caser is absolutely correct! What's next? - Insurrection Act? Mass arrests? Unrestrained violence against people engaged in resistance to the illegal actions of the regime?

All U.S. military personnel take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States - NOT to a person! Misusing members of the armed forces is both unconscionable and illegal, and we must not let this stand. Furthermore, members of the armed forces need to know both their rights and responsibilities under the law.

Please understand the difficulties faced by members of the armed services. They are duty bound to follow orders, and it is no simple matter to disobey an order a soldier believes might be illegal. There are serious consequences and they have little, if any, recourse. We, however, as (civilian) citizens of this country have the right to speak out on behalf of soldiers.

The soldiers currently deployed in Los Angeles are NOT the enemy. Many are likely questioning what they are doing, yet keeping quiet out of fear of reprisal. We need to do what we can to support them by helping them understand their rights as well as by challenging the Trump regime.

We need to barrage our members of Congress, asking them why they are NOT upholding the Constitution, and letting them know that we are going to vote them out of office unless they start representing We The People and NOT the grifters running our Democracy into the ground. I invite and encourage you to share the attached materials addressed to members of the military titled: "JUST FOLLOW ORDERS?" YOUR DECISION

World Beyond War published it on their website on April 21st. It was created by a longtime, respected member of the progressive community who wishes to remain anonymous, and I am helping spread the word and share this important work. You (and anyone you wish to share this with) are welcome to share the material in any way.

We must do everything we can to stop this madness, and reaching out to (AND SUPPORTING) military personnel is a critical element in our resistance. Let's get the word out before Trump's military parade!!!

Trump and the Destruction of the American Mind

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION: If you don't know of Robert Reich, I highly recommend you check out his writings. He is an American professor, author, lawyer, and political commentator, and served in multiple administrations, including Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration. He writes directly to, and for, the people (I would call him The People's Economist), in one of the most accessible and to-the-point styles I have encountered; he makes economics (and pretty much everything else) understandable. AND - He has, since the second coming of Trump, and his evil, authoritarian (and may I say - "FASCIST") regime, become more outspoken than ever! His writings inspire me to action!!!

Here is his latest (June 3rd) essay on Substack titled: Trump’s Vicious Attack on the American MindAs Reich says, Trump "wants America to be ignorant because ignorance is the handmaiden of tyranny."

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER, should we choose to use it wisely, and with courage!

Please read on...

****************

Trump’s Vicious Attack on the American Mind

Friends,

Why is Trump trying to cancel “Sesame Street,” which has helped children learn to read and count for over half a century?

Why is he seeking to destroy Harvard University?

Why is he trying to deter the world’s most brilliant scientists from coming to the United States?

Because he is trying to destroy American education — and with it, the American mind.

Throughout history, tyrants have understood that their major enemy is an educated public. Slaveholders prohibited enslaved people from learning to read. The Third Reich burned books. The Khmer Rouge banned music. Stalin and Pinochet censored the media.

And Trump, like past authoritarians, wants to control not just what we do, but also how and what we think.

He has embraced one of the mottos from George Orwell’s 1984: “Ignorance is strength.” He knows that an uninformed public is easier to divide and conquer.

There are five facets to Trump’s authoritarian attack on the American mind:

1. Rewrite history

The protagonist of 1984 works in the so-called Ministry of Truth, where he’s made to literally rewrite history because Big Brother knows that he “who controls the past controls the future.”

That’s chilling in a dystopian novel. It’s far scarier in real life, where Trump and his MAGA cronies are making schools whitewash slavery and segregation, cover up the genocide of Native Americans, and erase the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Authoritarians know that if they can convince us our country has never been wrong, they can make us believe our ruler is always right.

If they can make us forget how brave activists fought for change in the past, they can stop us from seeking change in the future.

Trump wants us to forget (or never know) that he lost the 2020 election and then instigated a coup against the United States.

He even claimed last weekend that former President Joseph R. Biden was “executed in 2020” and replaced by a robotic clone.

2. Gut education

As Trump tries to abolish the Department of Education, he’s also proposing to cut funding for K-12 public schools and to force universities to let him influence student admissions, faculty hiring, and what is taught.

As a professor, I know firsthand how education empowers young people’s minds. We can’t have a functioning democracy if people cannot deliberate critically about it. That’s why authoritarians replace education with indoctrination.

But the Trump regime doesn’t want a functioning democracy.

Instead of teaching students to think for themselves, authoritarians seek to instill blind allegiance and suppress dissent. As Trump adviser Stephen Miller said: “Children will be taught to love America. Children will be taught to be patriots.”

This is why the Italian and German fascists of the 20th century immediately turned their countries’ educational systems into instruments of the party.

3. Dismantle science

By freezing university research grants and attacking the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and USAID, Trump is stifling medical and scientific research.

And his cuts to the Centers For Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration put all of us at risk.

He’s also abducting and deporting international scientists who disagree with his administration. Can you imagine a crueler way to rob America of the global intellectual capital that has helped us become the world leader in scientific research?

He is now revoking visas of some Chinese college students. Some 277,000 students from China attended school in the United States last year, second only to the number of students from India. The United States employs tremendous numbers of scientific and technological experts originally from China. We need this continued pipeline of intellect and skill.

How can medical research and disease prevention be political? How can scientific research in general become political? Why is Trump afraid of science?

Because science acknowledges objective facts. Authoritarians insist that the ruler is more powerful than the facts. Trump wants to control the facts.

As George Orwell wrote, “it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this.”

4. Suppress the media

From suing ABC and CBS over their news coverage to threatening to strip network broadcast licenses to defunding PBS and NPR, Trump is trying to silence America’s sources of news.

As Trump repeatedly says: “I call it the fake news media.”

He wants control over what information Americans can (or cannot) get.

His regime is even going through social media accounts of people seeking visas to the United States.

A free press exists to question authority and help the public question it as well. But authoritarians insist that they must never be questioned.

Authoritarians want to consolidate state power over what the public can know.

5. Attack the arts

The arts exist to provoke us, challenge our thinking, and help us see beyond ourselves.

They arts are an important and independent aspect of an educated society, which is why authoritarians have historically attacked them.

So it’s no surprise that Trump is canceling grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, is dictating what’s displayed at the Smithsonian, and has installed himself as the chair of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

To limit art is to limit free speech and expression. It’s a crucial step that authoritarians use to silence anyone who dissents through creativity.

***

Added up, these five facets of Trump’s attack on the American mind render us less informed, less inspired, and easier to control.

They empower him to divide us with hatred and fear.

And they prevent us from discovering that we have more in common with one another than with the authoritarians who try to rule us.

This attack on our minds reduces our capacity for self-government because ignorance is the handmaiden of tyranny.

Dear Member of U.S. Military, “Just Following Orders” Is No Excuse!

“JUST FOLLOW ORDERS?” YOUR DECISION*

If you are a member of the United States Armed Forces you may be faced with a life-altering decision.

President Trump could invoke the Insurrection Act (quite possibly very soon), allowing him to deploy members of the U.S. military within the United States.

You could be asked to help round up American citizens or immigrant families for detention or deportatio— whether or not they have committed a crime. You could be ordered to the streets of American towns and cities to arrest U.S. citizens who are exercising their First Amendment rights to speak out for issues they care about — issues like health care, veterans benefits, protection of public lands, or Social Security.

What will you do?

You took an oath to defend the United States Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. What does it mean to fulfill that oath? What are the consequences if you do — or don’t? What impacts will your decision have on your life, your future, and your country?

Only you can answer these questions, but there is support.

You are not alone. You can ask questions and get confidential counsel about your rights and what you might risk. You will find support from veterans, attorneys, faith leaders, and others who will stand with you. To access these resources, do not use a government computer or phone. LEGAL CONSEQUENCES FOR ACTIVISTS

April 10, 2025

By Blake Kremer, Attorney at Law

SENTENCES FOR ACTIONS CAN BE LONG

Many of us who have friends or associates who have been arrested for activism are familiar with convictions that do not result in consequences that seriously impact their lives. But some of us know activists who have been jailed for months, even years. These activists who have experienced longer imprisonments have typically had prior convictions that increased their sentencing range. Still, it is not reasonable for an activist to assume that the result of peaceful activism would be a less impactful sentence. One of my greatest concerns for these people of conscience is the risk of unintended actions and unexpected consequences.

NEW THREATS UNDER THE 2025 POLITICAL CLIMATE

Under President Trump’s 2025 administration, peace activists face intensified threats of prosecution that differ significantly from prior years. These include:

1. Draconian Anti-Protest Laws: Since January 2025, more than 40 anti-protest bills have been introduced in over 20 states. These laws target peaceful protest and civil disobedience, labeling them as criminal conspiracies or "infrastructure sabotage." Activists disrupting military bases, energy sites, or government operations now face felony charges and years in prison.

2. Federal Surveillance and Criminalization: Peace groups are being surveilled more aggressively, and coordinated nonviolent actions are increasingly being framed as conspiracies under federal law. Activists face threats of being charged not only for their actions but for planning, coordinating, or simply being associated with those who take action.

3. Use of Immigration Laws: The administration has invoked the Alien Enemies Act to detain and deport activists with foreign ties, even lawful permanent residents. This signals a broader willingness to weaponize immigration enforcement against peaceful dissent.

4. Campus Crackdowns: Student peace activists, particularly those advocating for Palestinian rights or nuclear disarmament, are facing suspension, expulsion, and legal threats under vague accusations of "terrorism support." Universities are under pressure to discipline or disband such groups.

5. Potential Use of the Insurrection Act: The administration has floated using the Insurrection Act to suppress domestic protests, granting the federal government vast powers to deploy military force against peace demonstrations.

These threats mean that even low-level acts of conscience now carry much higher legal risks, particularly when coupled with vague and politically motivated law enforcement.

UNEXPECTED ACTORS AND CONSEQUENCES

I saw this during the 2020 Seattle Capitol Hill protest. The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), originally Free Capitol Hill and occasionally called the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP), was a protest that I assume many reading this are familiar with. During that protest I was contacted for representation by several activists who had engaged in “de-arresting” procedures. These activists had attended a speech at the CHOP where the speaker had discussed the appropriateness of physically pulling an arrested activist from police custody during an action. The speaker allegedly described this as a legally defensible “de-arresting” procedure.

Those who attempted or practiced “de-arresting” had a strong belief and understanding that what they were doing was legally justified. The police, however, saw this as a crime. Third-degree assault is defined in our state as a Class C felony involving contact with a firefighter, law enforcement officer, or another specific public servant. A judge can sentence a person to up to five years in prison and up to $20,000 in fines for this felony. A more serious charge could result from a “de-arrest” depending on what injuries a policeman reports experiencing. De-arresting is not, in my opinion, a valid legal principle and not a legal defense.

One of the many concerns I have is that peace activists may arrive at an action and only then realize that someone standing with them subscribes to the misguided “de-arrest” theory or a similarly flawed legal belief. These strategies may not become apparent until it is too late—when that individual takes an action that exposes the entire group to heightened criminal liability. This kind of surprise can turn a planned act of nonviolence into a serious legal crisis for everyone present.

CONSEQUENCES OF PEOPLE BELIEVING THEY ARE EXERCISING THEIR RIGHTS

In the wake of the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, more than 1,200 individuals were criminally charged, with hundreds convicted and sentenced to terms ranging from short probation to over a decade in federal prison. These prosecutions demonstrate that even those who believed they were acting on sincere political or constitutional principles were not shielded from serious legal consequences. While most individuals, as a result of having the sympathy of the executive office, have since received pardons or sentence commutations, the legal exposure, criminal records, and collateral consequences they faced remain highly relevant for any person considering action under a belief in moral or political justification.  Particularly for people who do not enjoy the sympathy of the executive office.

For peace activists, the lesson is clear: the justice system does not excuse actions simply because the actor believes they are constitutionally or ethically justified. You may find yourself standing next to someone who interprets a moment of tension as a call to escalate. Their actions could trigger consequences for everyone present, regardless of intent or planning. It is critical to understand not only your own legal risks but also the legal exposure created by those around you.

DISCERNMENT

One of the best protections against these risks is the practice of thorough discernment. As I learned working with Plowshares activists, deep discussion, mutual trust, and planning can reduce surprises during actions. Activists must talk explicitly before actions about their expectations, their thresholds for escalation, and how they will respond to provocation or trauma.

In the current climate, this kind of preparation is more essential than ever.

WORST-CASE SCENARIOS AND GROUP DYNAMICS

Activists should prepare not only for legal outcomes but for emotionally charged moments. One moment of panic, one step toward a fallen friend, or one defensive gesture could be interpreted by authorities as a threat. In today’s political environment, those moments may lead to conspiracy charges, terrorism enhancements, or accomplice liability.

Do you know what the people beside you are capable of under stress? Are you sure none of them are carrying items that could be interpreted as weapons? Has this person previously been arrested for assaultive behavior?  Have you had the kind of discussions that uncover past trauma, legal vulnerabilities, or mental health issues? In today’s landscape, these conversations are no longer optional.

ACCOMPLICE LIABILITY AND OTHER LEGAL RISKS

Showing up at a protest where someone else commits an illegal act can expose you to the same criminal liability as if you committed the act yourself. Accomplice liability, rendering criminal assistance, and accessory statutes can be used by prosecutors to punish peaceful activists for the conduct of others.

In today’s environment, the application of these statutes should be considered more aggressive, and the consequences more dire. What was once treated as symbolic civil disobedience may now be framed as organized sedition.

CONCLUSION

Until now, the typical federal charges for first time prosecutions for common peaceful activism remain minor: trespass, a small fine, perhaps probation. But this is no longer a time when typical outcomes are guaranteed. In today’s climate, the legal consequences of activism may be deeply disproportionate.

People from out of the area should be prepared to travel to the jurisdiction of the charge for subsequent hearings. People who are not U.S. citizens should be prepared to lose their right to enter the U.S. entirely. Individuals with significant anxiety or mental health disabilities should participate in a support role rather than direct action.  People who have been arrested before should consult an attorney to discuss and understand potential ramifications of a new arrest before participating.

Every activist must ask not only what they are willing to risk—but also whether they know the risks created by others standing beside them. Discernment is more than planning an action; it is planning for survival.

And in 2025, that has never been more necessary.

We (The People) Stand United for the Common Good

Autocracy, authoritarianism, dictatorship, totalitarianism, despotism, monocracy, fascism – so many ways to describe the current state of the (not so) United States of America.

Here in the U.S., both the public and private spheres have been abuzz about whether our country is experiencing a Constitutional crisis. For the most part - at least in the U.S. mainstream/corporate media - people tend to dance around the topic, stating or inferring that we are not yet there (wherever "there" is).

The website of the U.S. House of Representatives provides an authoritative explanation of how our Federal government is designed and intended to function in order to uphold the Constitution: "To ensure a separation of powers, the U.S. Federal Government is made up of three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. To ensure the government is effective and citizens’ rights are protected, each branch has its own powers and responsibilities, including working with the other branches." That seems clear enough; the system is structured to allow each branch to check and balance the others to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful – that is, assuming at least one or two branches are functioning as intended.

Something is certainly not working in that U.S. President Donald Trump and his cabal are clearly running roughshod over the other two branches of government (definitely not "working with" them) as he – with a sweep of his pen - eviscerates one governmental agency and law after another, disappears people and deports them without any due process, and attempts to remove anyone - and particularly any judge - who comes even remotely close to throwing a wrench in the gears of his shredder. While at least some judges are upholding their duty to the Constitution, the (Republican) majority in Congress is certainly not!

Yet, beyond the talk of a Constitutional crisis, there is another, deeper, and far more important, question: Just what, beyond the Constitution itself, is really going on here and why?

Beyond putting people's health, safety and financial security at risk, Trump is consolidating power at breakneck speed, undermining every check and balance, as well as the rule of law, and ultimately the nation's founding documents. He expects, and even demands, personal loyalty of everyone in government; threatens to jail political opponents; spreads conspiracy theories; fires anyone in the Federal government who exposes the truth or whom he sees as a threat to his power; threatens journalists and any public speech with which he disagrees in a blatant suppression of the First Amendment's guarantee of Freedom of Expression; conducts mass extrajudicial deportations; and much, much more.

It is clear that what we are witnessing is far beyond a Constitutional crisis. Of course it is a Constitutional crisis, but what is creating the crisis is a very well planned, and extremely well coordinated, effort to eviscerate what is left of the U.S. Democracy and establish an authoritarian state (a.k.a. DICTATORSHIP) run by a cabal of White Christian Nationalists.

As for The Constitution of the United States, I wouldn't be surprised to see "We the People" removed (by Executive Order of course) from the preamble any day now.

Elie MystalThe Nation's justice correspondent, speaking on DemocracyNow! on March 19th is one of the people with the clear vision and courage to have stated what is happening right before our eyes:

We live in a fascist dictatorship. That’s what’s happening right now. That’s what it feels like. This is where we are. There is not a coming constitutional crisis; we are in the constitutional crisis right now. Because what do we have — how can we call ourselves a democracy, how can we call ourselves a nation of laws, if one man, and one man alone, Donald Trump, is able to defy the other two branches of government? That’s what we have here. And that’s what Trump promised to do, and that’s what he is, in fact, doing.”

While it is clear that we are living through a crisis like never before in the U.S., what is less clear is the fact that the current crisis should come as no surprise, at least to any student of history. The groundwork for this crisis began well before the Constitution was written – history paints the picture: the kidnapping of “others” from distant shores to be used as slaves to build our economy, the conquest and genocide of Native Americans to steal their lands, of the building up of military power with which to threaten and control other countries for their resources and, in more modern times creation of the National Security State (and using fear of other countries) to justify whatever the government does as absolutely necessary for the protection of the people, the undue influence of corporations as“crony capitalism”, ignoring laws – both domestic and international, and the long-standing abandonment by Congress of its sole authority to declare war.

Those who have worked long and hard to prepare for this moment – including the creators of the infamous (and chilling) Project 2025 – are also the product of a long and ugly history: the Civil War that, as with most wars, never really ended; it planted new roots whose tree bore bitter fruit – manifest in the Ku Klux Klan, Joh Birch Society... and today's Heritage Foundation and other institutions built on White Christian Nationalism and other associated ultra-conservative thinking. Project 2025 is the culmination of decades of patience and planning (as well as the grooming of ultra-conservative judges), and we are seeing the results evolve in real time.

Most, if not nearly all, U.S. presidents have likely not seen this coming. They have been blind to the signs that they were leading the U.S. down the slippery slope by setting a precedent through their abuse of power that now presents an existential danger to the Republic. Examples include their unilateral use of war powers, extrajudicial detention (Guantanamo), and extrajudicial assassinations, to name a few.

At this point in history, any remaining threads of Democracy in the U.S. are threatened by what is a descent into a full-on authoritarian Fascist state.

Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt wrote about fascism (“Fascism Anyone?,” in Free Inquiry, Spring 2003, page 20). Studying seven fascist regimes, including those of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile), Dr. Britt found they all had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism.

Britt said his "Analysis of these seven regimes reveals fourteen common threads that link them in recognizable patterns of national behavior and abuse of power. These basic characteristics are more prevalent and intense in some regimes than in others, but they all share at least some level of similarity."

A number of these elements are extremely troubling in that they have existed in the U.S. to some degree for decades (and even centuries) leading up to our current crisis. Yet now, all of them are in place, and there are no apparent guardrails left to keep them in check. Our Democracy is in extreme peril.

LAWRENCE BRITT'S 14 IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS OF A FASCIST STATE

1) Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2) Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, and long incarcerations of prisoners.

3) Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists...

4) Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5) Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation.

6) Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation or by sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Government censorship and secrecy, especially in war time, are very common.

7) Obsession with National Security
Fear of hostile foreign powers is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8) Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.

9) Protection of Corporate Power
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10) Suppression of Labor Power
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed .

11) Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

12) Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13) Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14) Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

HOW DO WE THE PEOPLE RESPOND TO THIS CRISIS?

The only way to respond to Fascism is for We The People to come together in community for the common good. To stand up for the rule of law (rather than the rule of lawlessness), for human rights (rather than the rights of the rich and powerful), and for a better nation for ALL (and not just a privileged few).

We must not allow fear to paralyze us. Trump and his cronies are using the tactics of threats and intimidation in an attempt to control us and extinguish resistance to his authoritarian rule. By coming together in community we find other people with whom to share our concerns and fears and, most importantly, build a strong, resilient, and powerful movement to resist Fascist power.

Each of us is a unique human being, with our own abilities and limits. We must find what inspires us, what we feel able to do, and then try to push ourselves just a bit outside our comfort zone.

We must also be strategic in our planning, and use calculated tactics in all our actions. Above all, we must always apply nonviolence in every action. Nonviolent resistance is a transformative force for change. Gene Sharp's 198 methods of nonviolent action is a helpful starting point to understand what constitutes nonviolent action.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was both a modern-day prophet and a true believer in the power of nonviolence; not a popular belief in a country he called out as, “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today.” That statement, made in 1967, rings true now as it did then, even more so.

King’s conceptualization of nonviolence had six key principles

  1. One can resist evil without resorting to violence.

  2. Nonviolence seeks to win the “friendship and understanding” of the opponent, not to humiliate them (King, Stride Toward Freedom, 84).

  3. Evil itself, not the people committing evil acts, should be opposed.

  4. Those committed to nonviolence must be willing to suffer without retaliation as suffering itself can be redemptive.

  5. Nonviolent resistance avoids “external physical violence” and “internal violence of spirit” as well: “The nonviolent resister not only refuses to shoot his opponent but he also refuses to hate him” (King, Stride, 85). The resister should be motivated by love in the sense of the Greek word agape, which means “understanding,” or “redeeming good will for all [people]” (King, Stride, 86).

  6. The nonviolent resister must have a “deep faith in the future,” stemming from the conviction that “The universe is on the side of justice” (King, Stride, 88).

Dr. King held a deep spiritual belief that violent revolution was impractical: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. The beauty of nonviolence is that in its own way and in its own time it seeks to break the chain reaction of evil” (King, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community, 62–63).

The time for action is now! People across the country are already acting in solidarity - marching, rallying, and protesting against the Trump regime's destruction of our country. And there is much more to come.

Saturday, April 5th will be the largest mass mobilization to date – the NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION. The message will be clear: Hands off our Democracy! A core principle behind all Hands Off! events is a commitment to nonviolent action. Please find an event near you, and find as many other people in your community to participate. Together, our voices are strong; we will be heard!
